After a brief warm up and extended daylight hours the fishing has improved. There are still loads of salmon in the Upper Upper (Kenai Lake bridge and downstream) and the trout and dollies are still eating their eggs. What a bounty eggs for the trout and dollies over the last 6 months. Any fly gets a look this time of year but I would bet that beads are still outfishing everything else. Small black nymphs with a silver deadhead can be excellent in mid winter along with some of the classic nymphs like stoneflies, caddis encased in rocks and even some mergers on the sunnier days and locations. Exercise extreme caution on account of the large ice sheets and anchor ice prevailing in some locations. Jim’s Landing take out is more suited for rafts this time of year but still navigable by a skilled oarsman. extra rope to yank boats out is helpful and maybe a bag of traction sand in the pickup as well. Get out and enjoy the longer days and for the most part, no crowds!
